Basil seeks permission to travel to the U. S.

Former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa today, sought the Court’s permission to travel to USA for three months.

Rajapaksa, a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) whose passport was impounded by Court in connection with alleged fraud committed at the Divineguma Department, sought the Colombo High Court’s permission to temporarily lift his travel ban.

President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana with Jayantha Weerasinghe PC appearing for former Minister moved High Court Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena to allow their client to travel to the USA between December 10 and March 2 for medical treatment.

They further submitted to Court that their client was suffering from diabetes and had to consult his physician living in USA.

However, Senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagama appearing on behalf of the Attorney General informed Court that the Attorney General would file objections regarding the request.

Accordingly, the matter was fixed for objections on November 25.

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa was arrested by FCID on July 18 over an allegation of misappropriating Rs.36.5 millions funds belongs to the Divi Neguma Development Department to purchase and distribute GI pipes during the last presidential election.

He is currently out on bail
